Прообраз этой команды из Сан-Франциско появился в 1978 году под именем Paradox (не путать с немецкой бандой). Проект основали тинэйджеры Билл Петерсон (бас) и Дэн Уотсон (гитара). Состав группы на первых порах не отличался стабильностью и лишь с приходом барабанщика Дэйва Шмидта и вокалиста Денниса Манцо обрел некоторую твердость. Манцо присоединился к коллективу последним, а его появление было отмечено сменой названия на Hexx . В 1983 году квартет записал демо No escape , угодившее в руки босса Shrapnel records Майка Варни.
Работа музыкантов ему понравилась, и на следующий год Shrapnel выпустила их дебютный альбом, названный также как и демо. Пластинка по стилю представляла собой мелодичный хэви-метал, из-за чего Hexx иногда сравнивали с Metal Church и Savatage .
